Tolerance Analysis

Tolerance Analysis Fundamentals (300-00-035)

Description
This course utilizes a combination of lecture videos, detailed exercises, and a software demonstration to teach the fundamentals of tolerance analysis. Upon completion of the course students will be able to build and validate 1D tolerance stackups and make design decisions to optimize the nominal designs and tolerance assignments. The coursework is broken into tasks which students complete at their own pace.

Topics include:

- The need and objectives for using tolerance stackups to understand the impact of dimensional variation on the design.

- How to define and analyze stackups using both worst-case and statistical methods.
Statistical techniques are limited to Root-Sum-Squares (RSS).

- The importance and elements of the Tolerance Stackup Sketch

- How to account for clearances between parts (i.e. floating vs. biasing).

- Evaluating both directly-toleranced (i.e. +/-) dimensions as well as geometric tolerances
(i.e. ASME GD&T and ISO GPS).

- Methods for including the impact of material modifiers, both worst-case and statistically.

- Fixed and floating fastener formulas.

- Demonstration of 1D stackup workflows in software and comparison against
manual approach with spreadsheets.
